Prospect Hill Forge (PHF)
  • Where​ : 38 Guinan St, Waltham, MA 02451
  • What: Ready Set Smith!
    • ​​A straight-through series of classes roughly equivalent to the usual PHF offerings of "A Taste of Blacksmithing", "Rudiments of Blacksmithing I", and "Rudiments II" all in one package.
    • Techniques that will be covered:
      • Shop Safety
      • Basic Hammer Technique
      • Fire Management
      • Basic Tool and Tong Making

    • There will be 27 hours of class in 9 meetings of 3 hours each!

Prospect Hill Forge

  • What: Taste of Blacksmithing
    • ​Here's your chance to learn to control one of the basic elements of modern human life.
    • In this three hour class you will be introduced to the basic smithing techniques of hammering, drawing-out, cutting, bending, and twisting.
    • Using these techniques and a coal-fired forge you will heat a piece of iron to brilliant incandescence and with anvil, hammer, and tongs create a decorative and useful 'S'-hook.

The Steel Yard
  • Where​ : 27 Sims Ave, Providence, RI
  • What: Fundamentals of Blacksmithing
    • ​​A perfect introduction to the craft of metalworking, this course will teach the basics of heating and shaping steel. In this course we will cover fundamental blacksmithing skills such as tapering, spreading, bending, scrolling, and shouldering. 
      No previous experience necessary, metal will be provided for practice and exercises, but students must pay for additional metals needed for their independent work.

The Steel Yard
  • Where​ : 27 Sims Ave, Providence, RI
  • What: Viking Wood Axe Making​
    • They say if you chop your own wood, it will warm you twice. If you forge the axe, it will warm you thrice! In this advanced course, you will forge your own axe in the ancient way.
    • Students will create a small hatchet, using the asymmetric wrapped-method preferred by smiths in the viking era.  
    • This course is only appropriate to participants who have successfully completed a Fundamentals of Blacksmithing class, or similar 18+ hour introductory blacksmithing class. All tools and materials will be provided, and students will leave the course with a completed axe.

 The Steel Yard
  • Where​ : 27 Sims Ave, Providence, RI
  • What: Beginning Blacksmithing Workshop 
    • A perfect introduction to the craft of metalworking, this course will teach the basics of heating and shaping steel.
    • In two days we will cover fundamental blacksmithing skills such as tapering, spreading, bending, scrolling, and shouldering. These techniques are present in all levels of blacksmithing. Exposure to the pace of working the material and understanding the forge and the tools will provide the beginner with the interest and ability to take it further. 
    • Participants will each leave the course with a hand forged toasting hook and a bottle opener. This course is open to all skill levels and all tools and materials will be provided.
